The people of Aspen understand that it is important to preserve the natural environment that had originally attracted them to the area, and which continues to serve as an athletic and creative muse. To minimize harmful human impact on the environment, 57% of Aspen electricity is made from renewable energy. A mass transit system is also in place to reduce the amount of greenhouse gasses that are emitted into the atmosphere. Aspen has also installed solar trail lights and parking meters. The City of Aspen has taken an exemplary leadership role by installing low flush toilets in City Hall, and uses only 100% post-consumer recycled paper in copiers.
