Capitol Peak & Pierre Lakes

Capitol Peak, located in Colorado's beautiful Elk Range, rises to a height of 14,130 feet making it Colorado's 29th highest peak. What it lacks in elevation it more than makes up for in beauty and personality. Ask most climbers who have completed all of Colorado's fabled 14'ers which peak is the most difficult by its easiest route, you will likely get Capitol Peak as your answer.

Located in the heart of the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness Area, Capitol Peak is a majestic peak that is most recognized from the summit of neighboring peaks due in part to its classic profile. The massive 1,300 foot North Face offers several technical rock routes with the most popular being the Northwest Ridge rated at 5.7. Even the easiest route on Capitol Peak is still a class 4 scramble with more than enough exposure to satisfy the adrenaline fix.

From Capitol Peak there are magnificent views of the Pierre Lakes Basin. The lakes are home to very big trout, so it might be a good idea to bring that fishing rod with you, especially if you are planning an overnighter. Pierre Lakes Basin is a great stopping point, 6 miles in and 3,000 feet of gain. For those carrying on to summit Capitol Peak, Pierre Lake Basin is ideal for camping to get that good nights' rest with an early start the next morning.

This area is accessible for hikers, climbers, and mountaineering and backcountry skiers. The views from Capitol Peak are some of the best in Colorado. The hike to Pierre Lakes and to the base of Capitol Peak is also very rewarding and offers amazing views as well.
