Holden/Marolt Mining & Ranching Museum
If you would enjoy a hand on experience of ranching and mining in the Aspen, Colorado area, then you should visit the Holden/Marolt Mining and Ranching Museum. The Museum has mining machinery which dates back to the late 1800's and is in a setting which is representative of a town of that era.
In 1891, the Holden Lixiviation Mill covered over 22 acres on the edge of Aspen, Colorado. In its hey-day, the mill had state of the art technology. However, only 14 months after it opened, Congress demonetized silver and the mill went bankrupt. The property lay vacant until 1940, when Mike Marolt bought the property for one dollar and started using the property as a family ranch. The site located within walking distance to the outskirts of Aspen, Colorado is unique for it tells the story of the history of both Aspen's mining and ranching industries.
The combined history now forms the Holden/Marolt Mining and Ranching Museum and is located at the site of the 1891 Holden Lixiviation Mill, at 40180 Highway 82, Aspen, Colorado. Organized tours are available and self-guided tours are allowed at any time.
There is an admission fee - $6.00 for adults, $3 for children 12 and under, $5.00 for seniors. There are also group and family rates available.
