Redstone Castle, formally known as Cleveholm Manor, was once the home of one of America's richest men at the turn of the century, the 'Robber Baron' John Cleveholm Osgood. Osgood was a coal baron and built the entire town of Redstone as quarters for the managers and specialists of his coal mining company. Construction to this beautiful mansion began in 1897 and was completed in 1901. It sits on 72 acres near Aspen in the quaint town of Redstone, Colorado.
The Italianesque-style 42 room mansion is approximately 20,000 square feet with 16 bedrooms, 11 baths, a gentleman's game room, a great room, a stunning formal mahogany paneled dining room, music room, library and sun porch. Redstone Castle offers magnificent views of the Crystal River and the red colored mountains, which gave the area its name.
There are two other structures that were built to accompany Redstone Castle: the Carriage House and the Barn. The Carriage House sits on approximately 36 acres of mixed wood and meadows. This 5,000 square foot Victorian style Carriage House has been remodeled into a beautiful home with three bedrooms, two baths, a large family room, offices, and all the modern amenities. The Barn sits on 42 acres and contains six barns and outbuilding including a horse stable, the original dog kennels, an RV height carport, a huge barn, and two modern garage-type buildings – both with workshop space.
The historic Redstone Castle and property have had a number of different owners. In recent history, the Colorado Castle had the misfortune to be purchased via fraudulent means and was seized by the IRS and auctioned off so the victims of the investment fraud could be reimbursed. Area residents were hoping a deal from local residents would transpire, but the Treasury Department opted to put the Redstone Castle on the auction block instead and was auctioned off March 2005.
