Colorado River
Any angler can find some of the best fly fishing opportunities in the state of Colorado on the Colorado River. The Colorado River or the Grand River as it is also known originates in the Rocky Mountain National Park and then heads west toward the Utah state line. Three reservoirs are found near the beginning of the Colorado River – Lake Granby, Shadow Mountain, and Windy Gap. But for the most part, the Colorado is a free flowing river.
It has a major stream with many well known tributaries, such as the Blue, Eagle, Roaring Fork and Gunnison. The River begins as a small brook trout creek, turns to an average size stream as it passes through Middle Park and becomes a big classic western river after the Blue enters it just beyond Kremmling. Here the river enters Gore Canyons class V rapids until slowing down around the BLM`s Pump House recreation area. It is here that fly fishing is the best.
This portion of the Colorado is characterized by riffles, deep pools, long runs, sweeping bends, and lots of undercut banks. Much of this portion of the Colorado is fairly remote. The Colorado can be waded, but it is easier to fish it from a boat.
The fishing season on the Colorado River is open year round. Please be sure to check with local outfitters and the local Colorado Game and Fish to determine the appropriate areas to fish and to obtain the proper licenses etc.
Although much of the land along the Colorado is owned by the BLM, be sure to respect private property rights and don't walk on land unless you know who owns it. Currently there is a two fish limit and you need to be sure that you do not land one of the rare and endangered suckers which are located in the river. Currently there are no restrictions on method or size.
The Colorado River is not only a great place to fish, but while there you are surrounded by some of the most picturesque scenery in the world.
