Glenwood Caverns & Fairy Caves
A visit to Glenwood Fairy Caves and Caverns lets you peek into a geologic masterpiece that has been forming for millions of years. First discovered in the late 1800s when Charles Darrow noticed air flowing out of a hole near the top of Iron Mountain, an indication of the presence of a cave, the Glenwood Caves and Caverns have awed visitors ever since. However, it was Darrows daughter who gave the caves it's mystical name after the way her lantern's light reflected and bounced off of the many water droplets, resembling twinkling fairies. more info

The Darrow family operated tours through the caves until 1917 but had to shut down with the onslaught of World War I. It wasn't until 1999 when Steve and Jeanne Beckley reopened the caves to tourists. It took heavy negotiations, excavating, and cleaning to get the caves in working order.
Today, visitors can participate in a one hour guided walking tour through the caves, led by a knowledgeable guide, or get more rugged with wild adventure tours. There are lights along the walkways in the caves so it is not necessary to bring your own headlamps. However, the cave tour is a half mile in length and involves hiking 127 stairs at an elevation of 7,100 ft. The tour is not recommended for people who are pregnant or who have heart problems. Because of the steepness of the walk, there is no wheelchair access through the caves. For those who cannot take the walking tour, you can opt for a ride on the Iron Mountain Tramway which takes you to the top of the mountain where you can enjoy a sunset or get a bite to eat at the restaurant.
