The idea for the tramway was born when the Buckleys, the owners of the tramway, wanted an easy way to access the summit of Iron Mountain. However, the Buckleys wanted to preserve as much of the natural landscape as possible. One of the only tramways of its kind in the United States, the Iron Mountain Tramway was built without cutting down any trees. Helicopters were used to fly in towers so that clear-cutting would not be necessary.
