Amtrak provides an enjoyable ride that allows you to sit back and enjoy scenic views throughout Colorado and the Rock Mountains. However, if your final destination is Aspen, be aware that Amtrak does not stop there. The closest Amtrak depot to Aspen is located 40 miles away in Glenwood Springs along the California Zephyr. To get to Aspen from Glenwood Springs, you will have to take public transportation, hire a taxi, or rent a car. Another option is to take the train into Denver and then catch one of the frequent shuttles that run to and from Aspen.
When booking your trip to Aspen on Amtrak, it helps to do a little research. Make sure you are familiar with routes and fares. Check the Amtrak web page for weekly specials as they change often. To get the best price, it helps to make reservations early and to be flexible with your dates.
Before you leave, make sure you have all the proper travel documents such as identification, tickets, and itinerary information. Also keep in mind that Amtrak allows only two carry on luggage pieces up to 50 lbs. each, and three check in pieces up to 50 lbs. each. Visible name tags are required on all luggage.
On board, Amtrak offers coach, business, and first class seating.
Make your seating reservations early. There are food service cars which serve light meals and drinks. You are allowed to bring your own food but you may not use Amtrak ovens and microwaves to heat up personal meals. Alcohol is available in the dining cars. Some long distance trains provide audio and video entertainment. You may bring your own personal electronic devices such as CD and DVD players.
However, be considerate of others and keep the volume down.
To make your trip more enjoyable, you might want to bring a deck of cards, your favorite pillow or blanket, comfortable footwear, crayons and coloring books, and travel games. While traveling by rail through Colorado, you might want to bring binoculars and a camera as you will be passing through the breathtaking Rock Mountains.
