Airport Information

The airport is served by three airlines operating daily, year-round scheduled service. The airlines serving the airport are United Express (operated by Air Wisconsin), Northwest Airlink (operated by Mesaba Airlines) and America West (operated by Mesa Airlines). The airlines occupy ticket counters, baggage facilities and offices at the airport for full services to the flying public. Current annual airline enplaned passengers are 249,000, which makes the airport the third busiest airport in the state.

Passenger services inside the terminal building include: full service restaurant and bar, courtesy phones, rest room facilities, gift shop, public telephones, vending machines, newspaper racks, lockers, airport administration offices, various ground transportation providers, and five rental car agencies.

The Aspen/Pitkin County Airport is one of Colorado's 13 commercial service airports (there are a total of 79 public-use airports in the State) and is the third busiest airport in the state based on enplaned passengers. It has over 240,000 annual enplaned passengers, 40,000 annual takeoffs and landings and 103 based aircraft.

Aspen/Pitkin County Airport has one runway, Runway 15/33, oriented along the river valley, roughly northwest to southeast.

The airport is located along Highway 82.

History

Walter Paepcke and John Spachner founded the Aspen-Pitkin County Airport as a privately owned, public use gravel landing strip in 1946. The primary user of the airport at the time was the Aspen Institute, the forerunner to Aspen Airways. The original facility consisted of a log cabin terminal building and a gravel runway. In 1956, Aspen Airport Corporation officially deeded the Airport to Pitkin County making it a publicly owned public use airport, one of the requirements for federal participation in airport development.
