At the base of Snowmass look out for a team of over 200 sled dogs. It takes eleven of these dogs to lead a wood and rawhide sled. A sled can hold two adults and sometimes a small child. Your experienced musher will be your guide and will answer any questions you may have about the dogs and the surroundings. The dogs typically run at a speed of four miles per hour. Here are some basics to practice before you go. Haw means turn left. Gee means turn right. Hike it up means go forward and whoa, of course, means stop.
Dog sledding tours last from December through mid-April. Twelve mile trips run morning, early afternoon, and evening. Dog sled trips are about two hours depending on where you go and when you book. Tour around through aspen groves and the White River National Forest. Rest for a bit and enjoy great food and wine. This is an activity not to be missed, so make sure you reserve at least a week in advance.
