Of course, Aspen Mountain is most famous for its ski slopes. It is, however, purely intermediate and expert terrain. Dip onto black steeps to rid you of the previous night's cobwebs, then shoot out on to blue cruisers for some respite.
But while Aspen grew to prominence as a world-class ski resort, winter does bring an amazing variety of other things to do here. Besides downhill and cross country skiing, there is mountaineering, ice skating, romantic sleigh rides and thrilling snowmobiling Also, snowboarding is allowed here, including a terrain park.
Off the slopes
Free up some space on your Platinum MasterCard if you plan on shopping in Aspen. Or spend your time joining in on a favorite sport of Aspen residents - watching ladies in perilous heels mince down the heated sidewalks with practiced elegance before crossing the unheated icy roads in a frenzy of wind-milling arms and leather fringing. If you insist on off-loading huge amounts of cash there is no better place to do so than at the new Prada store - Italian perfection housed in a building which is an homage to faux Rocky Mountain cowboy chic.
The dinner and bar scene here is truly a spectacle to behold. There is no point in announcing the celebrity roll call - just keep your eyes peeled as you tuck into your Buffalo Carpaccio at Campo di Fiori. And remain cool and unfazed as Jack Nicholson leers in your direction at Little Nells bar, a place full to bursting with silicone peaks that have never seen a pair of skis!
Over 100 restaurants of every variety exist in town. The town of Aspen has full services, ski shops, boutiques, drug, liquor store, bank, post office, chapel, and childcare for ages 6 weeks and up.
